Banner Health Moves Utilization Management Forward to Improve Quality and Efficiency

Banner Health, a large nonprofit health system operating in seven states, created a centralized utilization management department to update its case management processes, ensure a consistent practice model across its 23 acute care hospitals, and reduce denials. Tamara Pruett, RN, CPHM, IQCI, discusses Banner’s key challenges, improved processes and measurable quality and financial improvements in this case study. A major factor in the program’s success was the cultivation of the case manager’s ability to go beyond utilization management and take a more strategic approach to patient stays.
